$25,000 Challenge Grant
When Dave Logsdon, the chairman of Wayne Homes, heard about the Free Clinic of Medina County, he knew it was a perfect match for the Logsdon Family Foundation. “Once I found out what this team has been doing, donating was a no-brainer!” Logsdon said recently. “The passion of the people who volunteer at the Free Clinic and the good works that they do are phenomenal. The amount of medical services which they provide for each dollar that’s received creates astounding leverage.” Logsdon, his wife Jan, and their adult children formed the foundation based on a two-part mission; first, to enable self-reliance and second, to take care of those who can’t be self-reliant due to circumstances beyond their control. That perfectly aligned with the Free Clinic’s mission to provide medical services for working residents of Medina County who can’t otherwise afford it. Because the Free Clinic is able to provide $30 of medical services for every dollar donated, Logsdon quickly did the math and donated a challenge grant of $25,000. “I know that the mission of the Free Clinic folds right into the mission of the Logsdon Family Foundation and that’s why we issued the challenge grant,” he said. “There are many good people faced with the choice of: ‘Do I take care of this health problem, or do I pay the rent?’ If our $25,000 gets matched, that’s $50,000. Multiply that amount by $30 of services for every dollar donated and $1.5 million worth of medical services will be provided for those in need!'” This challenge has been immediately taken up by Logsdon’s business partner of 28 years, William Post, and his wife Ginny. They’ve provided the first $10,000 towards the grant’s match. (Side note: more is still needed!) “Our company has always been philanthropic,” Logsdon explained. “Each Year, every teammate is given paid time off to do whatever charitable work they think is appropriate. All we ask in return is that they share with us a story of the good that it brought about in the community. It’s wonderful to hear ‘look what happened because we got together and did this…!'” Logsdon said both his and his wife’s parents led by example and that spirit has now continued into a third generation with their three children. “Every year we held a family gathering where our kids would say ‘ Mom and Dad, this is where i want the family to give this year, and here’s why,'” Logsdon said. “Then at the following year’s gathering, each would say ‘This is the good that our gift was able to do.’ Whatever each came up with was well researched beforehand as well as afterwards; every donation had an annual ‘closed loop’. We started this when they were in high school, and our children are now in their 30’s and have become co-trustees.”

Dave and Jan Logsdon
Logsdon described the wonderful feeling that comes from helping others in need, “Doing good makes one feel good! Jan and I used to give anonymously until we learned that the best way to inspire others is to let our friends and acquaintances share in what we are doing. I know that they like to feel good about doing good too!” he said. “Our goal is to give back to the communities where we live, work, and play. That’s the meaning of success.”
